My Pick

Houston Texans Analysis….

The Texans bounced back from an embarrassing loss at the hands of the Jacksonville Jaguars in their season opener, with a great defensive performance against the Cincinnati Bengals last Thursday. The team’s reward for the win is a matchup with the defending Super Bowl champions.

In the season opener, the Texans started Tom Savage, who was the most experienced quarterback on the team. After one inept half, head coach Bill O’Brien handed the reigns to rookie Deshaun Watson.

Even though Watson hasn’t been a significant upgrade over Savage, his ability to run the ball gives Houston’s offense an added dimension. He also showed his poise against the Bengals, rushing for a 49 yard touchdown one play after being decleated by Geno Atkins.

Defensively, Houston is still one of the best teams in the league, and they will be counting on J.J. Watt and his defensive teammates to make things easier for them by hounding Tom Brady all game long. If the defense can get to Brady, they will be able to slow the Patriots offense down and keep their offense in the game.

New England Patriots Analysis….

The Patriots also bounced back from a season opening loss last week. 10 days after being humiliated at home by the Kansas City Chiefs, the Patriots hit Bourbon Avenue and defeated the New Orleans Saints in a one sided affair.

Offensively, the Patriots are still one of the best teams in the NFL, even without injured receiver Julian Edelman and injured tight end Rob Gronkowski, who might miss this game.

Defensively, the Patriots are currently one of the worst teams in the league, which is surprising for a Bill Belichick coached team, but significant in juries to important players tend to do that to teams.

With the Texans coming to town, the Patriots offensive line has to do a great job protecting Brady up front because the Texans know their best chance of winning this game is to make things hard on Brady, so the defense will come after him from the first possession of the game.

The Patriots have also struggled historically with mobile quarterbacks, so their defense has to figure out a way to prevent Watson from killing them with his legs like he did the Bengals last week.

The Pick…

The Patriots will likely control most of this game, but their suspect defense will give up some big plays so take the Texans +14.

Play: Texans +14
