Kentucky Derby 2017 – Betting Odds and 3 Free Picks

It’s Kentucky Derby week and I am excited for Saturday.  It’s the most exciting 2 minutes in sports and this year there are a lot of horses who have a legitimate shot at winning the race.

Let’s kick things off by looking at the odds from and then I will give you my 3 favourite picks to win the race this weekend.

Kentucky Derby Odds 2017

As you can see there is no real overwhelming favourite this year.  Last year Nyquist, who ended up winning, was 3/1 heading into the Derby and the year before American Pharaoh was a 2/1 favourite.

This year we have four horse with better than 10/1 odds in Classic Empire, Always Dreaming, Mccraken and Irish War Cry, with another 9 horses having 20/1 odds or better.

My Picks

Of the favourite’s under 10/1 odds my pick to win is Always Dreaming.  This horse won the Florida Derby in April and posted a solid 1 1/8 mile time of 1:47.47, while beating Gunnevera who is 14/1 at the Derby in the process.  Always Dreaming has won both of his races this year and has shown that he knows how to close a race.  Check out the video of the Florida Derby to get excited about this horse:

Of the horses with longer odds I’m stuck on two. I like both Thunder Snow at 14/1 and Hence at 20/1.

Thunder Snow is on a 3 race winning streak, including 2 recent wins in 2017 in the UAE. I also like the fact that his last race was a 1 3/16 mile race, which is closer to the 1 1/4 mile of the Derby than most other horses races of 1 1/8 mile. The competition will be much stronger than Thunder Snow has seen to this point in his career, but I think he has the ability to rise to the occasion now that he has the taste of victory over his last 3.

Hence is coming off a win at the Sunland Derby where he posted a solid time of 1:48.10 en route to the win.  He is a horse that is somewhat inconsistent, but he has shown he has the speed to compete with the top horses in the Kentucky Derby field.  If he can show up on race day and maintain his speed down the final stretch he has a shot to win, which makes him a great flyer at 20/1.

I’ll personally be taking a wild stab at a trifecta with these three horses, which could really pay off if they all hit in the same race.
