2018 NCAA Tournament Sweet Sixteen Betting Picks

The Sweet Sixteen get underway tomorrow and after this weekend the NCAA Tournament will have it’s Final Four teams.

Below I’ve given my picks for each of the Sweet Sixteen games, as well as a quick write-up with my reasoning.  I’ve taken the odds from BetOnline.ag, our top rated betting site.

Loyola Chicago vs Nevada

  • Loyola Chicago +1
  • Nevada -1

Loyola pulled out two big upset victories over #6 Miami and #3 Tennessee in the opening weekend, but both games required some last minute clutch play and I think Loyola’s luck will run out on Thursday against a Nevada team that has looked very solid against tougher competition.

Nevada showed a ton of heart in their comeback win over Cincinnati in the 2nd round and I like them to get the job done.  I’m expecting a big game from the Martin twins in this game.

Play: Nevada -1

Texas A&M vs Michigan

  • Texas A&M +2.5
  • Michigan -2.5

Michigan needed a last second buzzer-beater from Jordan Poole to get past Houston in the second round, but they are still in the tourney and they’ve now won 11 straight games and continue to get the job done.  Michigan was my pick to win the tournament and they still are even after that close call.

Texas A&M had a huge game against UNC, but I can’t overlook the fact that they are still only 5-4 in their last 9 including the two tournament wins.  I don’t expect Michigan to shoot as poorly as UNC did against Texas A&M in the second round and I think Michigan could pull away in this one.

Play: Michigan -2.5

Kansas State vs Kentucky

  • Kansas State +5.5
  • Kentucky -5.5

Kansas State had their bracket open wide after Virginia lost to UMBC in the first round.  I do have to give Kansas State credit and say that they were able to get the job done and make the Sweet Sixteen, but this is a huge step up in competition against Kentucky and I don’t think they will be able to keep pace.

Kentucky is another team that had a fairly easy road after #13 seed Buffalo upset Arizona in the first round, but Kentucky easily dispatched of Buffalo and I think they are playing their best basketball of the year after winning the SEC tournament as well.  They’ve now won 5 in a row and 9 of their last 10.  I like Kentucky to pull away in this one.

Play: Kentucky -5.5

Florida State vs Gonzaga

  • Florida State +5.5
  • Gonzaga -5.5

Gonzaga got the job done, but they had a scare against #13 UNCG and then did just enough to get past Ohio State in the second round.  Florida State has impressed me with their double digit win over Missouri (I had Missouri in that one) and then dispatching #1 seed Xavier.

I think this game is basically a coin flip, so I will take the points.

Play: Florida State +5.5

Clemson vs Kansas

  • Clemson +4.5
  • Kansas -4.5

Kansas took advantage of being a #1 seed getting past #16 Penn and #8 Seton Hall last weekend, but now the real games start against the tougher competition and I don’t think they will be able to rise to the challenge.

Clemson had a couple very solid games against last weekend, culminated by destroying Auburn 84-53.  I really like how this team is playing right now and I think they could pull off the upset or at least keep this game close.

Play: Clemson +4.5

West Virginia vs Villanova

  • West Virginia +5.5
  • Villanova -5.5

Villanova’s offense has lived up to the hype so far getting into the 80’s and winning both their first two games by 20+ points.  West Virginia is another team that has shown the ability to score in bunches (85 and 94), but they’ve played against two fast paced offenses in #12 Murray State and #13 Marshall and I do not expect them to be able to keep pace with Villanova.

Look for Villanova to pull away and then for West Virginia to start forcing shots which will play right into Villanova’s hands and allowing them to pull away by double digits.

Play: Villanova -5.5

Syracuse vs Duke

  • Syracuse +11.5
  • Duke -11.5

I don’t know how Syracuse is an 11.5 point dog after two big wins over TCU and then Michigan State, who many had winning the tournament.  Syracuse also had to beat ASU in a play-in game just to be in the tournament.  Their confidence is at an all-time high and even though they are outmatched talent-wise in this game I still expect them to at least be able to keep the game within 10 points.  Syracuse lost to Duke by 16 points earlier in the season, but that was at Duke.  Now playing at a neutral location against a fellow ACC team I expect a competitive game.

Play: Syracuse +11.5

Texas Tech vs Purdue

  • Texas Tech +1.5
  • Purdue -1.5

Purdue pulled out a big win over Butler in the second round and I expect them to continue their march towards the big Elite Eight matchup with Villanova with a win over Texas Tech.

Play: Purdue -1.5
